In July 2014 Glasgow will host one of the world’s largest and most prestigious sporting events – the XXth Commonwealth Games.
Staging this prestigious event will cost an estimated £524 million of which £424 million is public finance (80% from the Scottish Government, and 20% from the council). The remaining £100 million will be secured through a commercial programme encompassing sponsorship, broadcasting rights, ticket sales, and merchandising.
Glasgow City Council is responsible for delivering the venues, the Games Village and the transport infrastructure for the Games on time and to budget. It is also vital to leave a lasting legacy for the city. Glasgow 2014 Ltd, the organising company will deliver the actual 11 days of competition.
To ensure world class business performance the council wants companies of all shapes and size to be given the opportunity to compete for contracts related to the Games
The Commonwealth Games Business Portal has advertised hundreds of millions of pounds worth of business opportunities since its launch in October 2009, with almost 80% of contract awards going to Glasgow and Scottish companies. Building on this lasting legacy and success, Glasgow City Council has been working with partners to maximise the business opportunities available to local companies outwith the Games. This has resulted in the development of the Glasgow Business Portal to advertise business opportunities across a range of projects.
The portal will continue to be an on-line business networking and matching service that will publish both public sector and private sector contract opportunities.
