Glasgow School of Art

Glasgow School of Art Estate Redevelopment Phase 1

Phase 1 of the Glasgow School of Art’s Garnethill campus redevelopment has commenced on site, with a due completion date in August 2013. At a total project cost of c. £50m this exciting and inspired new development on Renfrew Street sits immediately opposite, and complements, the School’s world-famous building by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Designed by Steven Holl Architects (New York), in conjunction with JM Architects (Glasgow) and Arup Engineering, the new building will replace two buildings on the site and adjoin the retained and fully refurbished Assembly Building used by the Students’ Union.

Sir Robert McAlpine has been appointed as the main contractor for the demolition and construction works.

The majority of the new, 11,500m2 building will comprise well proportioned Studio and Workshop spaces for learning, teaching and research in the creative arts. A new, 300-seat state-of-the-art Lecture Theatre, Seminar, Informal Learning, recreational and publically-accessible Exhibition spaces will also be provided; along with the Simon Sainsbury Mackintosh Interpretation Centre.
