"Council is immensely proud that Glasgow will next month host the XX Commonwealth Games, as awarded by the Commonwealth Games Federation, which will be broadcast to a television audience of around 1.5 billion people; notes that all venues were built and in use by the people of Glasgow more than a year in advance; welcomes that over £181 million of Games-related contracts have been awarded to Glasgow firms helping create around 4,500 jobs and apprenticeships; is pleased that sports participation levels have increased across the city with attendances in our sports facilities at an all-time high of 6.6 million; celebrates that record numbers applied to volunteer, with 16,500 set to represent the city this summer; notes that over 90% of tickets have now sold out; is deeply grateful to the highly professional and dedicated staff across the Council family for all that they have done and will do to help deliver the best, most athlete and spectator-focussed Games ever; warmly thanks the Organising Committee and Games partners, Commonwealth Games Association Scotland and the Scottish Government, for working so well alongside the city; commits afresh to deliver a Games legacy of lasting benefit to the people of Glasgow; and wishes every success to Team Scotland and, in particular, Glasgow's athletes." View Papers

"Council is concerned at ongoing high levels of poverty in Glasgow, particularly child poverty, as a consequence of many factors, including a shortage of well-paid and sustainable jobs for Glaswegians.

Council notes the recent Joseph Rowntree Foundation briefing, Poverty and Work in Scotland, and the finding that the risk of a family being in poverty depends on its work intensity: the more hours worked by the adults in a family, the lower its risk of poverty. Higher wages strengthen this effect.

Council further notes steps taken in Glasgow to improve employment prospects, to create and maintain opportunities to work and start new enterprises and to take steps to alleviate the effects of poverty.

As the powerhouse of Scotland's economy, Glasgow must do more to reduce child poverty through working in collaboration with Government to strengthen our local economy. Council therefore calls on the Leader of the Council to write to the First Minister, following the publication of the Scottish Government's strategy, "Reindustrialising Scotland for the 21st Century: A Sustainable Industrial Strategy for a Modern, Independent Nation", to convene a summit on the re-industrialisation of Glasgow and the west of Scotland, with a view to improving the employment opportunities and life chances of today's - and tomorrow's - workforce." View Papers
(c)By Bailie Dr Nina Baker:-

"Glasgow has established an international reputation for challenging violence against women. However this problem persists, notable in recent weeks in a number of serious sexual attacks which have taken place across the city. It is recognised that, despite progress made, there is still work to be done both at home and internationally. White Ribbon Scotland campaigns to challenge violence against women by engaging directly with men and boys to change behaviour, challenge attitudes and raise awareness of violence against women in all its forms.

Council therefore re-affirms its support for the campaign and agrees to promote it and encourage elected members' and staff to take the White Ribbon pledge. Furthermore, Council agrees to work in partnership with White Ribbon Scotland and Glasgow Violence Against Women, to deliver a wider support network to secure the objectives of the campaign and to develop a strategic policy to reduce such violence.

Council will work with its many international links and also commits to exploring how it can support citywide events which seek to raise awareness and tackle violence agianst women." View Papers

"Council recognises the enormous contribution of the British Broadcasting Corporation to the City of Glasgow, especially during 2014 - The Year of Glasgow - and the value of being home to its multi-million pound Headquarters and associated media facilities; recognises that Glasgow is home to over 2,200 broadcasting jobs; celebrates the success of Radio 1's Big Weekend which was attended by over 70,000 people bringing an estimated £3.6 million to the local economy; welcomes the BBC's extensive commitment to covering the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games including 1,800 hours of network TV, radio and online content; and its planned coverage of the Scottish First World War commemorations in Glasgow; is delighted that the BBC Scottish Symphony orchestra is homed in the city; and welcomes the decision to host BBC Proms in the Park and the 2014 BBC Sports Personaility of the Year Awards in Glasgow this year." View Papers

"Council recognises the risk older and vulnerable residents face every year from bogus callers and rogue traders.

Awareness is key to tackling this underreported crime and Council commends and supports the Nominated Neighbour initiative from Police Scotland, which aims to help beat doorstep crime and raise awareness of the potential danger of bogus doorstep callers. Council also welcomes the forthcoming collaboration between Community Safety Glasgow, Police Scotland and Trading Standards to compile a database of "No Cold Calling Zones", which will identify problem areas in the city and allow relevant agencies to provide support and guidance to vulnerable residents."
(f)By Councillor Ken Andrew:-

"Council recognises that Glasgow enjoys a long-standing international reputation as a major centre for music.

Council notes the many bands and artists that started their career in the city. Council further notes that no major rock act misses Glasgow from their touring schedule.

Accordingly, this Council instructs Glasgow Life to investigate a festival of Rock, Blues and Indie music to be held in the summer. This festival would use the highly successful format used by the South by South-West Festival in Austin, Texas. This supports hundreds of new acts, as well as showcasing new material from more established artists."
