9Notice of motion to Council from Councillor John Mason

"Glasgow City Council notes the reduction in democratic control over a number of key public services including the railways, gas, electricity, water, trunk road maintenance, and (specifically in Glasgow) secondary schools. This process has been carried out by both Thatcher and Blair governments and is inherently anti-democratic. It is not surprising that turnouts at elections have fallen when successive governments have backed private companies and quangos over against democratically elected government at both local and national level.

Therefore this Council confirms its belief that as wide a range of public services as possible should be under direct democratic control and resolves to oppose further moves towards privatisation of services locally and nationally."
