FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

When are the Games taking place?

The Games will be held over 12 days with the Opening Ceremony on 23rd July 2014 and the last day of competition and Closing Ceremony on 3rd August 2014.

Which sports have been chosen?

In November 2006 the Commonwealth Games Federation agreed there should be 10 core sports, with each bidding city able to select up to a further 7 sports.

The 17 sports chosen for the Glasgow 2014 Games are: Athletics, Aquatics, Boxing, Badminton, Weight Lifting, Lawn Bowls, Hockey (men and women), Rugby 7s (men), Squash, Netball (women), Cycling, Shooting, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Judo, Table Tennis, Triathlon.

The sports programme will be reviewed after the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Where will the Games be held?

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will use a mix of existing and new facilities. Over 70% of the venues are already in place, although some of these will be substantially updated and improved.

The vast majority of the venues are no more than 20 minutes from the Athletes Village, which will be constructed in the East End of the City and will house around 6,500 athletes and officials during the Games. All the facilities will be suitable for use by Glasgow's communities when the Games have finished.

What will it cost?

The total cost of staging the Games in 2014 is £454m (2007 prices). Income of £89m will be generated by the Organising Committee (OC) through broadcasting, sponsorship, merchandise and ticket sales. The balance of £365m will be contributed by the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council.

Glasgow City Council will contribute £69m over the period to 2014.

Over 70% of the venues are already in place, and a further 20% are committed, so we will avoid many of the problems associated with large capital projects.

The Bidding process cost £5m, which was shared equally between the Scottish Government and the Council.

Where will all the spectators park?

One of the key transport strategies for the Games will be that there will be no Spectator parking at or around venues. This will ensure that the area around venues will be free of congestion, providing a safe, clean air zone around these areas.

It is proposed that spectators will receive free public transport (within Glasgow) when attending events, and additional public transport will be provided to cope with increased demand including additional bus and rail services,  Park & Ride and City Centre Shuttles. Spectators will also be fully encouraged to walk or cycle to events.

Will people living near the venues be able to get in and out when the Games are on?

A Transport Plan will be developed for the Games which will addresse 3 key areas:

(i) Provide secure, reliable transport for the Games family (athletes and officials)

(ii) No spectator parking at venues with all spectators arriving by Public Transport

(iii) Keeping the City Moving

A combination of measures will be put in place to ensure that these objectives are met. There will be demands placed on the roads and public transport network; however by careful management of existing road space, increasing public transport capacity during the duration of the Games, and working with the public and businesses to work smarter (revised working hours, home working, changing delivery times) we are confident that the residents will be able to fully enjoy the Games experience and get to work without any undue delay.
