The Lord Provost's message

Lord Provost Bob Winter

On behalf of the citizens of Glasgow, welcome to the Glasgow City Council web site.

It is truly an honour to be the Lord Provost of my wonderful home city of Glasgow.

The Glasgow in which I was born was known as the “Second City of the Empire” and was a powerhouse of heavy industry, supplying ships, locomotives and heavy industrial products worldwide.

Since then, the end of Empire and the decline of those industries have caused a profound change in the City, as we lost population and jobs.

But over the past two decades, Glasgow has seen a huge transformation, from “Glasgow’s Miles Better” in the 1980’s to “1990 City of Culture” and today’s “Glasgow: Scotland With Style” brand.  I am proud of the part that my predecessors as Lord Provost have played in the City’s progress, and I will strive to emulate them.  But above all, the new Glasgow is a testament to the qualities of our citizens, and above all their resilience and character.  So it is my commitment that I will do all that I can to ensure no-one is left behind as the City’s re-birth continues.

Glasgow is now one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, with record investment creating jobs, homes and prosperity, offering tourists and residents alike a wide range of sport, culture, retail and entertainment.

The number of visitor attractions in the city continues to grow with attractions such as the Gallery of Modern Art, The Lighthouse, Glasgow Science Centre and of course the £27.9 million renovation of the award winning, world-famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Glasgow has a full and exciting calendar of annual festivals and events such as Celtic Connections, Magners Comedy Festival, West End Festival, World Pipe Band Championship to name but a few.

We are of course still celebrating the announcement that Glasgow will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games  - a fantastic accolade for Glasgow and for Scotland. The Games will bring huge economic, housing and cultural benefits for Glasgow and its citizens. This will also offer opportunities for increasing Glasgow's global profile, and at the same time build Glasgow's role as host city and to develop relations with Commonwealth countries and cities.

It is an exciting time for the City of Glasgow and I invite you to visit and experience our exciting and welcoming city.

To find out more, our website offers information on what is happening both in the City and the Council.

With best wishes,

Bob Winter
Lord Provost of Glasgow

Appointed May 2007
