Provosts of Glasgow

Provosts of Glasgow

The Medieval burgh of Glasgow was administered on behalf of the bishops of Glasgow by two, or sometimes three officials, usually known as ‘bailies’, sometimes as ‘provosts’.   The creation of the office of provost in the modern sense of a single chief magistrate was not until the early 1450s (certainly by December 1453, probably not before August 1450).   Thereafter the sequence of office holders is incomplete until the beginning of the council records in 1574 and occasionally even thereafter.  Until 1833 the provost and other officials were normally chosen in late September or October, after that date the election was in November.  Thus the reference to 1800, below, means the official year beginning in October 1800.
