Havana (Cuba)

Situated on the north coast of the island, Havana is Cuba’s colourful capital and also the largest city in the Carribean. It is the country’s leading cultural centre and features many museums, palaces, public squares, avenues and churches. The city is also the centre of the national government and various ministries and business headquarters are based there.

Tourism has become the most dynamic sector of the economy, having replaced sugar as the main collective of convertible currency. Emerging sectors have also been created, transformed or strengthened, including biotechnology, medical equipment, iron, steel and mechanical industries, informatics and communications.  These industries are also well supported by professionals and workers, health services, education, sports and other activities.

The historic old town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and very popular with tourists. The Spanish left behind some superb colonial architecture and many of the buildings and grand plazas have being restored to their former glory.
