1.4 For thirty years, a determined effort has been made to transform Glasgow. The City's post-industrial renaissance is recognised worldwide. Glasgow is the largest of Scotlands cities with 611,440 residents, one third of the population of the wider Clydeside Conurbation which it serves. It is the centre of the Clyde Valley Conurbation, the largest urban area in Scotland.
1.5 The City offers a choice of retailing bettered only by London. It is the largest office centre in Scotland and the fourth largest in the UK and the third ranked tourist destination in the UK. The City has a rich physical and cultural heritage unrivalled in Scotland.
1.6 Glasgow has over 11,000 businesses and is the largest manufacturing centre in Scotland. Home to three universities, Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and 10 colleges of further education, it is Scotlands premier centre for education, internationally recognised for its academic excellence. Today's Glasgow is a vibrant, dynamic city capable of responding to changing needs and meeting the demands of the new millennium while respecting the rich heritage of its illustrious past.
