Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - Areas of Focus - Castlemilk

Context

10.116 The boundaries of Castlemilk are defined by Croftfoot Road to the north, the City boundary to the east, Cathkin Braes/Windlaw Farm to the south and Linn Park Golf Course/Linn Cemetery to the west. Built in the 1950s and 1960s, Castlemilk was a traditional council housing estate on the southern perimeter of the City, about 4½ miles from the City Centre. From a peak of 37,000 in the early 1970s, the population of the area has fallen considerably and the assumed population currently being planned for the area is between 15,000 and 16,000.

10.117 Since 1988, when Castlemilk was designated a Partnership Area, the area’s innovative regeneration effort has resulted in significant positive change to the benefit of local residents. The aim of Castlemilk Partnership’s Strategy was to develop a well-functioning suburb in which people would choose to live and work and which was better integrated with the Glasgow Conurbation. Much of the investment to date has been in housing renewal, a process that is around two-thirds complete. There is an outstanding commitment to complete this regeneration process and protect the investment already made by a wide variety of agencies.
