Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - Areas of Focus - M8 East

Context

10.60 The area focuses on the M8 from the Baillieston Interchange in the east to Junction 12 (Cumbernauld Road) in the west and incorporates the fourteen neighbourhoods that comprise Greater Easterhouse. Within the M8 East Area of Focus there are opportunities to:

establish an eastern gateway to the City;

enhance the development potential of the motorway corridor;

better integrate Greater Easterhouse with the rest of the City;

allow Greater Easterhouse to become a more cohesive City suburb; and

build on existing social, economic and investment priorities.

10.61 There has been significant investment in the area over the last 10-15 years, particularly in housing, by neighbourhood-based housing associations and co-operatives and the Council. Much of the tenement stock has been improved or demolished and replaced with lower density housing. This activity, together with an emerging owner-occupied market, has resulted in improved housing choice. There is a need to develop this process further to halt population loss and attract new residents to the area. Despite the recent improvements, deep-rooted poverty problems have resulted in SIP status for Greater Easterhouse.
