Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - Environment - Vacant and Derelict Land

Realising The Development Potential Of Vacant And Derelict Land

7.54 The reduction of vacant and derelict land within Glasgow will impact positively on the City’s environment, safety, biodiversity and overall image, factors crucial to attracting investment. With two initiatives well established, a third is being developed by the Council, in partnership with SEG, to tackle long-term vacant and/or derelict sites.

7.55 The programme is focused on Alliance Areas, especially those with Social Inclusion Partnership status, and aims to increase their marketability, improve their image for potential investors and provide valuable training and job opportunities through action ranging from site investigation and site preparation to urban forestry and decontamination. Running parallel to this, the Council is examining ways of involving the private sector directly in derelict land reclamation. The cumulative effect of these initiatives will be to realise the development potential of around 50% of the City’s vacant and derelict land and bring it into productive use.

The City Council will continue to develop and implement initiatives aimed at securing the beneficial re-use of 800 hectares of vacant and derelict land by 2005.

7.56 The Council has identified a number of Significant Development Opportunities distributed across the City. Development of these sites would contribute to the physical and economic regeneration of the City. The list in paragraph 7.59 is not exhaustive. The Council is keen to see other vacant sites in the City developed and will support appropriate development on such sites.

7.57 Sites which require remediation have been excluded from this list of development opportunities because they are not immediately available. As with other unlisted vacant sites, the Council will support proposals that addressed the site’s remediation needs and delivered appropriate development outcomes. Also excluded are key Council owned sites where there are existing development partners or where the Council is evaluating offers, for example Pollok, Garthamlock, Toryglen, Auchinlea (part), Priesthill and South West Castlemilk.

7.58 Further details of the Significant Development Opportunities and other vacant sites can be obtained from the Council’s Development and Regeneration Services’ Register of Vacant and Derelict Land in Glasgow.
