Backcourt:
In the Glasgow context, a backcourt is associated with residential tenement buildings and is laid out as a private shared garden space to the rear of the property, generally one for each tenement close.
Backland Development:
Development on land which is normally within a residential area, which does not have direct access to a public street or road frontage, e.g. land to the rear of residential properties, area of land which is wholly or partly land-locked by other developments.
Base Accessibility:
A measure of public transport accessibility, that indicates the provision of a minimum level of service (see Supplementary Guide 6 for criteria).
Brownfield Sites:
These are normally sites which have previously been developed or used for some purpose which has ceased.
They may encompass re-use of existing buildings by conversion; demolition and new build; clearance of vacant or derelict land and new build; infill and various other forms of intensification. It excludes private and public gardens, sports and recreation grounds, woodlands and amenity open spaces.
Built Form:
The shape, or architectural form, of a building (or buildings) employed as a general concept to convey the visual character of buildings. Examples include villas, terraces, tenements, multi-storey.
Built Forms:
The impression of a building when seen in relation to its surroundings.
Bulky (Household) Goods:
Comparison goods that are of such a size that they would normally be taken away by car or delivery vehicle (being inconvenient for customers travelling by foot, cycle or public transport), requiring extensive display areas and therefore commonly (but not exclusively) sold from retail warehouses, for example DIY goods, electrical goods, furniture, carpets.
Business Class:
A use that falls within Use Class 4 Business of the Town and Country (Use Classes)(Scotland) Order 1997. See Use Classes.
Busways:
Fully developed bus priority including virtually continuous dedicated bus lanes and absolute priority at junctions. Often associated with guided bus.
