Garage Forecourt Shop:
Retail outlet provided at a petrol filling stations, originally concentrating on the sale of motoring-related goods but increasingly selling wider ranges of general (especially convenience) goods, to the extent that some mainstream food store operators are now moving into this sector.
Glasgow Alliance:
Established in 1993 as a collaboration between the principal agencies working in and for the good of the City and now including the Council, Communitie’s Scotland, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow, Greater Glasgow Health Board, Scottish Executive, Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector, Scottish Business in the Community, Chamber of Commerce and the private sector.
Greater Glasgow Housing Choice Survey 1994:
A survey of households who moved house within the Greater Glasgow area during 1994, relating particularly to their reasons for moving, and the factors that influenced the choice of their new house and area.
Green Belt:
Green belt is a designation for the land surrounding towns. In accordance with Circular 40/1960, green belts have three main purposes: to maintain the identity of towns by establishing a clear definition of their physical boundaries and preventing coalescence; to provide countryside for recreation or institutional purposes of various kinds; and to maintain the landscape setting of towns.
Green Network:
The network within the City incorporates the land that is designated Green Belt, together with the land that is designated greenspace. They account for around 20% of the land area of Glasgow and form links throughout the urban area, including along rail and main road corridors.
Green Transport Plan:
Means by which an employer and/or service provider can seek to reduce the negative impacts of travel to and from a site in which they have an interest. Part 2 of the Plan contains a Supplementary Guide (SG 5: Green Transport Plans) that provides details of the necessary requirements.
Greenfield Sites:
These are sites that have never been previously developed or used for an urban use, or are on land that has been brought into active or beneficial use for agriculture or forestry, i.e. fully restored derelict land.
Greenspace:
Greenspace is multi-functional and includes allotments, cemeteries, local nature reserves, wildlife sites, watercourses, woodlands, lochs, river valleys, other linear spaces (such as the Canal and national cycleway network), sport and recreational uses (such as public parks, golf courses, playing fields, tennis courts, bowling greens and sports grounds), ornamental gardens, amenity open spaces, areas of landscape importance and flood attenuation areas.
Gross Retail Floorspace:
Total indoor floorspace used for retail purposes. Consists of total floor area used for sales purposes and for related functions such as storage, food preparation areas and staff facilities. Excludes outdoor elements such as car parking, service areas etc. In enclosed shopping malls, excludes pedestrian circulation space outwith retail units. In multi-storeyed premises, the relevant floorspace of all storeys is included.
Guided Bus:
Bus system that can have tram like characteristics. Bus is guided by mechanical, electrical or optical guidance when in dedicated lane and by driver when outwith this lane. At all times driver controls acceleration and braking.
