Landmark: A building or structure that stands out from its background by virtue of its height, size, or some other aspect of design.

Lane: A lane is a narrow road or street, normally located at the rear of properties. A land can adjoin boundary walls, rear gardens, hedges or fences on both or one side, or provide access to back court areas.

Large Food Store: Store predominantly for the sale of foodstuffs and other convenience goods, of between 2,500 and 5,000 m2 gross retail floorspace.

Large Single User High Amenity Site: Defined in National Planning Policy Guideline 2: Business and Industry (NPPG2), a site that is between 5 and 30 hectares in size and provides a high quality environment for a single industrial and business user.

Leakage: Substantial expenditure flow from a defined area to a major outlet(s) and/or centre(s) outwith the area.

Light Rail: Modern tram that operates on dedicated track.

Light Rapid Transit: Collective term that includes light rail and guided bus.

Listed Building: A building recognised for its architectural or historic importance and included on the Scottish Ministers’ Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Importance. Listed buildings are categorised A, B or C(S) depending on their merit. Listing covers both the interior and exterior of the building regardless of category. All original features are protected by law. Listed Building Consent is required to demolish or alter a listed building.

Local Centre: In this Plan, these are centres covered by tier 4 of the hierarchy of centres. They are not included in the Joint Structure Plan’s schedule of town centres to be safeguarded through structure and local plans, and generally provide a very localised service to the immediate areas that they serve; they are however considered to constitute centres within the definition of National Planning Policy Guideline 8: Town Centres and Retailing (NPPG8).

Local Shop: Single shop or outlet possibly within a small group of shops serving the small-scale day-to-day needs of the immediately surrounding residential area.
