AIM
The City Council aims to improve the quality and range of education facilities in the City.
6.75 Glasgow is Scotland’s largest centre for education, with three universities and a range of further education colleges. The Council’s supportive attitude towards the role of tertiary education and its research-related functions is recognised in the Jobs Section. While proposals to extend the range and improve the quality of tertiary education and related provision is generally welcomed, the Council is mindful of the need to avoid dealing with proposals in a piecemeal manner. Proposals for tertiary education and related facilities should, therefore, be discussed in the context of a campus development plan (see policy DEV 9: Civic, Hospital and Tertiary Education).

Glasgow University
The City Council will encourage all Tertiary Education institutions to prepare Campus Development Plans.
6.76 The Council’s Education Service is facing major challenges in terms of organisation of its schools and in relation to the curriculum being offered. The secondary school system has been reviewed and, in 2000, the Council launched the largest schools modernisation programme in the UK funded through a Public Private Partnership. The focus may now switch to the future organisation of primary education, particularly the need for primary education provision relative to major residential development and redevelopment proposals. The education consultation process will be informed by wider regeneration agendas, particularly in the New Neighbourhoods and the Areas of Focus.

Hillhead Secondary School Extension
The City Council will assess the requirement for the provision of Primary Education relative to major residential development and redevelopment proposals.
