6.81 Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are an important and vital infrastructure that can improve the competitiveness of the office sector and enhance the efficiency of the local economy. ICT allows instantaneous transmission of information through advanced telecommunications networks. Increasingly, successful economic activity depends on accessing the right information at the right time and cost. While Glasgow has a relatively advanced and extensive telecommunications network, further investment will help the City maintain its competitive edge. Having the network available does not guarantee its use. Encouraging wider use of existing and future networks would help reinforce the City’s competitive advantage.

6.82 The Council is mindful of the increasing importance of the knowledge economy and anxious to ensure that the City is well placed to meet the challenges of the new century. Part 2 of the Plan provides policy guidance on the installation of telecommunications and cable infrastructure across the City.

The City Council will support investment in Information and Communications Technology and co-operate with other public agencies to promote the City’s high quality telecommunications network.
