Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - Infrastructure - Town Centres Shopping and Commercial Leisure Development

Local Shopping

6.48 Many parts of the City, especially outlying residential areas, lack local shopping provision, a problem exacerbated as expenditure is increasingly drawn to large modern retail stores elsewhere. Local shops remain an important feature of neighbourhood life, supporting community spirit and inclusiveness. The viability and vitality of local shops varies across the City. A review is required to establish the adequacy of this provision and determine the need for improved facilities.

The City Council will review the adequacy of local shopping provision in all areas of the City and bring forward measures to provide or improve facilities where appropriate. Priority will be given to facilities serving the New Neighbourhoods and SIP areas.
