Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - Infrastructure - Water and Sewage

Context

6.70 Scottish Water is responsible for water and sewerage provision in Glasgow. With the decline in population and the disappearance of water-using heavy industry over the past 20 years, there is a surplus in the overall water supply over demand (approximately 25%). Despite this overall surplus, there are limitations in the water distribution system in areas furthest from the Inner City. Major developments around the edges of the City, therefore, would require substantial reinforcement of the water distribution system to be made before they can be adequately served.

6.71 Recent investment by Scottish Water has been geared to making the best use of existing infrastructure by fine-tuning the system to allow sewage to be taken to works capable of higher standards of treatment. In certain circumstances, improved technology can be used to deal with additional demands.
