Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - River

Agenda For Change - Area 1

Shieldhall/The North Bank

Area Characteristics

This area contains the last vestiges of the working industrial river:; BAE Systems in Govan; King George V Dock at Shieldhall; and the South Street Corridor as far as Yoker Waterfront. It remains of significant economic importance to the City and to the wider conurbation. BAE Systems at Govan and Scotstoun are the only shipyards now remaining on Upper Clydeside and Clydeport has now concentrated its port operations at King George V Dock. South Street is the main arterial route along the north bank and is characterised by a mix of low-grade industrial uses occupying former dock and ship repair sheds and more modern industrial buildings grouped in small estates. Yoker Waterfront benefits from a ferry link to Renfrew and features a number of significant development opportunities. A programme of site clearance and remediation, supported by investment in roads infrastructure, could unlock further industrial development opportunities along South Street.

Braehead on the south bank, the site of the former Braehead Power Station, now lies within Renfrewshire. Phase 1 of the Braehead Retail Centre and Maritime Heritage Centre opened in September 1999. Renfrewshire Council and Capital Shopping Centre plc, have prepared an area development framework that examines the opportunities for further residential, commercial and leisure development along the south bank of the Clyde between Braehead and Renfrew.
