Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - River

Agenda For Change - Area 5

Tradeston/Broomielaw

River Clyde - Area 5

Area Characteristics

This area, particularly the Broomielaw, continues to be a focus of major office and business investment in the City. Developments by British Telecom and Scottish Enterprise have continued the dramatic regeneration process first begun with the development of Atlantic Quay. The urban form and townscape character of the metropolitan core’s River frontage has been dramatically re-shaped and the City’s image transformed by these large corporate office buildings. Residential and leisure developments have been established as part of a wider strategy to stimulate the regeneration of the River corridor west of the Kingston Bridge.

The main pedestrian route on the River’s north bank, the Clyde Walkway, links the metropolitan core with the SECC to the west and Glasgow Green to the east. Unfortunately, the walkway is isolated from the City Centre’s main commercial and leisure activities, and has had limited success in attracting waterfront activity. Broomielaw/Clyde Street remains one of the City’s main east/west traffic routes and this role is expected to increase with the implementation of the new City Centre traffic management proposals. It also forms part of the National Cycle Network that converges with the City’s two other National Cycle Routes at the Bell’s Bridge.

Tradeston, on the south bank of the River, has seen increasing developer interest in mixed-use activities, including residential and commercial activity. The former Co-operative building on Morrison Street has been converted to loft style apartments, and there are proposals for new build housing on adjacent sites which will consolidate the residential development that is being established in western Tradeston. Increased developer interest in the Tradeston area has stimulated a re-examination of the area for mixed-use development and of its relationship with the River.
