Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 1 - Development Strategy - River

Urban Design And Landscaping

9.25 Urban design has an important role to play in the renaissance of the Clyde in Glasgow. An urban design framework would unify individual developments by promoting a consistent quality of design, materials and landscape treatment within public areas. Design solutions should respect the scale and history of the Clyde and surrounding buildings, integrate new development with the River and convey a sense of importance and permanency in new walkways and urban spaces. New developments should explore their relationship with the River and adjacent communities both on the same, and on opposite, bank.

9.26 In line with the broader aims of the Plan, higher density development will be encouraged in locations well-served by public transport. New development clusters should incorporate uses that generate activity throughout the day, providing the focus for activity that makes the River more accessible and the experience of visiting it safer and more enjoyable. Themed signposts and streetscaping, applied to these clusters and to adjacent streets, will encourage movement between these clusters, established areas and the River, increasing use and improving passive security.

9.27 Central to the successful transformation of the role and image of the Clyde will be the improvement of links to adjacent communities. Quality streetscaping and signposting can consolidate the regeneration of these areas, creating continuity and increasing the use of the River as a focus for leisure activity and facilitating movement through safe and attractive pedestrian/cycle routes. The long-term aim for the River corridor is the creation of a Linear Park. This would not be a park in the traditional sense, but rather a series of linked spaces designed within a framework that promotes consistent design quality and landscape treatment.

The City Council will develop the concept of a Linear Park to provide a design and environmental framework for the development of the public realm along the Clyde corridor.
