The area designated ‘PRINCIPAL OFFICE AREA’ lies within Glasgow City Centre and contains the City’s largest concentration of office floorspace. In order to support the area’s strategic office function and capitalise on its high accessibility, the Council will continue to promote the Principal Office Area as the preferred location for high density business-class developments involving office floorspace. The Council will seek to maintain and improve the quality of the area by encouraging the redevelopment and refurbishment of obsolete office floorspace and supporting proposals that improve accessibility and maximise employment opportunities, subject to other policies of the Plan. Uses that complement the office function of the area and extend activity outwith office hours will be considered in relation to local circumstances and other policies. The eastern part of the Principal Office Area overlaps with the Principal Retail Area. Within this area of overlap, offices are normally found on the upper floors of buildings with shops on the ground floor. These uses are compatible with one another.
