Adopted City Plan : 01 August 2003

City Plan - Part 2 - Development Policies - Section 6 - Transport and Parking

TRANS 2 International Transport Facilities

CONTEXT AND JUSTIFICATION

Strategic Policy 5 of the Joint Structure Plan safeguards a number of international transport facilities because of their importance to the economic competitiveness of the Joint Structure Plan area. In Glasgow, the facilities to be safeguarded are Deanside Freight Terminal and King George V Dock. Deanside Freight Terminal handles a large volume of goods entering the City by rail and this type of facility assists in minimising heavy goods vehicle movements within the City. King George V Dock provides the West of Scotland with an export/import facility for shipping. It is considered that export-based industries, in particular, will be supported through enhancing and developing the capacity and effectiveness of these facilities.

POLICY

The Council will safeguard the sites of the international transport facilities at Deanside Freight Terminal and King George V Dock from development that would impair their effective operation as freight facilities, or that would undermine future prospects for the development of this role.
