Glasgow is bidding to become the first city in the UK to be awarded the title of European Green Capital. The prestigious award would be a boost to our Sustainable Glasgow partnership programme which was formed to help Glasgow become one of the most sustainable cities in Europe.

Glasgow is seeking to win the title for 2015 and, if successful, the dear green place will become the first UK city to hold the title.

Each year since 2010 one European city is awarded the title of European Green Capital. The bid to become the title holder is a competitive one and the EC select the winner only after a robust application and presentation process. On this page we will let you know how Glasgow is progressing with our application with links to the many areas in which we are enhancing and improving Glasgow’s environment. We expect to be submitting our application in October 2012. We’ll be including details on what we are doing with:

  • Reducing our carbon emissions by 30% by 2020
  • Our new Waste Strategy
  • The Commonwealth Games environment strategy
  • Improving air quality and noise in Glasgow
  • Developing a clean energy supply stream and district heating proposals
  • Making the best use of our green and open spaces and enhancing access, use and biodiversity
  • Creating a sustainable transport system for a modern sustainable city
