Taxi MOT and inspection

The M.O.T., Taxi and Private Hire Enforcement Unit is responsible for inspecting all taxis and private hire cars licensed by Glasgow's Licence Authority.

Each licensed operator is required, by law, to have their vehicle inspected on a minimum of two occasions per year.

These inspections are scheduled on a six monthly basis and carried out in our M.O.T. Inspection Centre at 425 Polmadie Road .

The vehicle inspections are based on an M.O.T. inspection standard, though the standard applied is slightly higher than that of the usual M.O.T. inspection.

Further ad-hoc inspections are carried out on the streets of Glasgow by our team of Enforcement Officers who operate on a 24 hour basis.

This Unit is empowered by the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 to enforce the conditions attached to the taxi/private hire vehicle and driver licences issued by the Licensing Authority.

Our aim to protect the general public, is achieved by:

  • maintaining a high standard of inspection
  • enforcing the conditions attached to the various licences
  • carrying out investigations into complaints raised against licence holders by members of the public
