Since 2001 Glasgow, City 0f Light has delivered over 80 projects; from the lighting of buildings close to the heart of a local community through to lighting buildings of international importance.
The aims of the Lighting Strategy are:
- To improve Glasgow’s image and promote the city as a visitor and tourist destination.
- To enhance the safety and perception of safety of all pedestrians and road users.
- To enhance residential amenity and security.
- To highlight the city’s architectural heritage and landmarks.
- To develop lighting as an art form in the city.
From Drumchapel Water Tower in the west of the city to Beardmore steamhammer in the east each lighting project seeks to create a vibrant effect and increase the perception of safety.
The Mitchell Library and City Chambers positively glow as complex lighting designs celebrate the rich architecture and in turn the City’s heritage. At Anniesland Tower the lighting not only increases the skyline impact of this highrise but also seeks to increase the quality of the residential environment.
Lighting and art successfully came together in the Radiance Festival of Light with the profile of the city being raised internationally.
Glasgow is also a proud founding member of Lighting Urban Communities International (LUCI) and successfully promotes the positive message of the City’s creativity, renewal and regeneration to a wide audience.
Most lighting schemes are switched on from dusk to 1.00am Monday to Thursday and dusk to 3.00am Friday to Sunday. The Winter Lighting programme operates between October and March.
