Regeneration of Oatlands

Community & Recreational Facilities

The regeneration proposals for Oatlands make provision for a whole range of other facilities to cater for the needs of local people, and, indeed, the wider area including the Shawfield industrial neighbourhood to the south-east where the Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company has ambitious plans for large-scale economic development.

Commercial Facilities

A group of local shops is envisaged to mark the heart of the new neighbourhood, and a high quality family pub/restaurant is proposed overlooking the model boat pond in Richmond Park.

The neighbourhood shops will be provided as part of two phases of the Oatlands development - two shop units in each - providing a total retail floorspace of 350 square metres or approximately 3,500 square feet.  The first two shop units already have detailed planning permission, and these are likely to accommodate a general store and possibly a pharmacy.  Efforts will be made to attract a post office facility, although such provision cannot be guaranteed at this stage.  Unfortunately, the building of these shop units has been delayed because of the financial downturn.  However, options for the provision of a temporary local shop are under active consideration.

The proposed family pub/restaurant building will be a most attractive local facility and visitor destination of city-wide appeal, situated in the mature landscape overlooking the pond with its proposed fountain and regular model boating activity.  Related proposals include changing facilities for the proposed sports facilities in Richmond Park.   An appropriate developer for this building will be sought in due course.

A further opportunity for commercial development exists on a triangular site adjacent to the second part of the Rutherglen Road diversion, between Polmadie Road and Shawfield.  This new road, completed in April 2010, forms the first part of the East End Regeneration Route and is directly linked to the M74, opened on 28 June 2011.  This highly visible site was purchased in March 2010 by the Clyde Gateway Urban Regeneration Company which is promoting its development as part of a larger business park proposal.
