Rutherglen Road Diversion
The new four-lane by-pass road along the southern boundaries of the site (New Rutherglen Road) will feature two bus stops in each direction and is being lined on both sides by maple trees. A major road and landscape feature is the dual-carriageway ‘Boulevard’, two lanes in each direction and featuring three lines of cypress oak trees, two lines of Scottish rowan trees, and swathes of daffodil planting. The first phase of the road diversion, including The Boulevard, was opened in November 2006, with the rest to follow in 2009 onwards.
The whole Rutherglen Road diversion will transform one of the main road approaches to the city centre, and is designed to create a good first impression of the City of Glasgow for travellers entering from Rutherglen/South Lanarkshire and (eventually) from the M74. The eastern part of the road diversion will form the southern extremity of the East End Regeneration Route which will link north to the M8.
