Asbestos

The UKAS-accredited Asbestos Unit of Environmental Protection Services survey for asbestos-based materials in all the Council’s non-domestic premises. This is a requirement under the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations. By carrying out these surveys it ensures that Council Staff and Contractors working Council properties are not unnecessarily or unexpectedly exposed to asbestos when carrying out repairs, refurbishment or demolition of properties.     Asbestos surveyors

We also offer a service for air testing in a variety of circumstances involving asbestos issues.

There are various types of tests, including clearance tests, reassurance tests, background monitoring, leak tests and personal monitors.

These tests are undertaken, on behalf of many departments, to ensure that the City Council complies with current asbestos legislation.

Tests are also carried out to reassure various clients when they have concerns about asbestos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1          What should I do if I suspect asbestos in my  home?

Q2         How can I get the asbestos removed/treated?

Q3          I suspect asbestos has been dumped near my home, what should I do?

Q4          Is there any Council facility where asbestos can be disposed of safely?

A1        Don’t panic – asbestos is only dangerous when disturbed.  If it is safely managed and contained it doesn’t present a health hazard.

GHA tenants should contact your local housing office.  They will be able to advise you of the procedures to be followed.  The local housing offices can arrange for samples to be taken to confirm the asbestos content.  When the asbestos content has been confirmed it is the GHA’s decision on the next course of action.

Homeowner’s should contact a private asbestos contractor who should sample and analyse the material for the presence of asbestos.  After analysis they may provide advice on the best course of action.

A2         Asbestos shouldn’t be removed unnecessarily.  Removing it can be more dangerous than simply containing it.  Asbestos should only be removed/treated by a licensed contractor.

Local housing offices will determine the condition of the material and advise on the best course of action.  If you own your home, a licensed asbestos contractor should be consulted.

No grants are available from the Council to aid in the removal/treatment.

For independent advice contact the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or the Environmental Health department.
