Scientific Services remit is to provide a comprehensive scientific service to local authorities, private business and government agencies.

 

Glasgow Scientific Services remit and responsibilities can be broken down as follows: 

Air Quality

With increasing awareness and concern about air quality, Scientific Services offers a service to sample, analyse and monitor air/gas in households, workplaces and the general environment.

Analysis would include:

  • nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide
  • landfill gases
  • noxious odours
  • radon gas
  • emergency planning
  • factory emissions
  • odour complaints
  • rainwater
  • metals
  • smoke levels
  • dust
  • volatile organic compounds
  • indoor air quality (including Carbon Monoxide)
 
 
 
Scientific Services offers a complete service tailored to each client’s specific requirements.

Contaminated Land analyses include:

  • desktop survey
  • sampling, equipment and machinery
  • analysis with respect to the most relevant guidelines
  • detailed reporting

Water and food quality are of great concern and these are routinely examined as part of surveillance programmes.

A range of foods and environmental samples  can be checked for radioactive contamination from various sources.

As lead authority of the West of Scotland Environmental Radiation Monitoring Scheme (WSERMS) we are responsible for the analysis, testing and monitoring from the Solway Firth to the Western Isles.

 

Scientific Services is LARnet (Local Authorities Radiation Monitoring Network) accredited and RIMNET (Radiation Incident Monitoring Network) approved.

  • recreation waters from lochs are checked for both chemical and microbiological quality
  • mineral water from boreholes
  • drinking water checked for compliance with EC standards
  • swimming pools checked for bather comfort and safety
  • trade effluents tested against discharge consents
  • surface water analysed to determine source
  • leachate monitoring

Glasgow Scientific Services assists Trading Standards Officers with enforcement of consumer safety.

We assist Trading Standards Officers in enforcing consumer safety and trading standards legislation, the laboratory tests the following goods for compliance with regulations and other commercial standards.

  • toys
  • textiles
  • fertilisers
  • household chemicals
  • pesticide residues and formulations
  • fuels classification and testing
  • building materials
  • writing materials
  • animal feedingstuffs

Assistance with the classification of Special Waste

 

Waste material from a variety of sources can be analysed according to the appropriate regulations. Scientific Services can then assist the client with the exact classification of such waste.

Analyses offered include:-

  • Heavy metal content
