Licensed Premises: a Trader's Guide

A short guide for publicans and other licensees, to the Trading Standards laws affecting their business

A variety of Trading Standards laws affect licensed premises. The most important of these is the Weights and Measures Act 1985

  • you must sell beer and cider in quantities of 1/3, 1/2 or 1 pint or multiples of these.
  • you must sell gin, rum, vodka and whisky in quantities of either 25ml or 35ml or multiples of these.  You must choose to serve either 25 or 35 ml and this measure must be the same throughout your premises.  You are not allowed to give different measures in different bars. Please note that de luxe, malt, bourbon and rye whiskies are covered by this and should be served in the appropriate measure.
  • wine, by the glass, must be sold in quantities of 125 or 175ml or multiples thereof.  You may use both these quantities.
  • you must display notices stating the quantities in which you serve gin, rum, vodka, whisky or wine.
  • any equipment you use to measure these quantities should bear an inspector’s stamp, or other approved mark, to show it has been tested and approved.
  • prices should be displayed.
  • all quantities, notices or price lists, should be displayed in such a manner that they are clear, legible and easily read.
