Free Movie Screenings for Glasgow Kids

Glasgow youngsters can now get free access at two of the city's most popular cinemas

The deal between the Council, the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) and the IMAX cinema at Glasgow Science Centre will see a special screening for city youngsters every weekend at each cinema.

All Glasgow Kidz Card and Glasgow Young Scot Card holders are eligible for free access.

The GFT will also allow accompanying adults to get in without charge, while adults accompanying Glasgow Kidz Card holders will be given free entry at the IMAX.

And the Council has reached a similar agreement with another major city attraction – the Scottish Football Museum at the National Stadium, Hampden Park.

From Saturday, June 5 any youngster who arrives at the museum between 10-11am on Saturday mornings will get in free. Accompanying adults will be admitted for just £1. All children under 12 must be accompanied.

The partnerships – which together will cost the Council some £25,000 a year – were agreed as part of Education Services’ ‘Widening Access’ initiative. The money is coming from the Scottish Executive’s National Priorities Action Fund.

Education Services convener Councillor Steven Purcell said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Glasgow’s young people.

"Thousands of pupils will have the chance to go to the cinema or the Scottish Football Museum who might otherwise not have been able to. And if an adult is accompanying them to a film, it won’t cost them a penny."

At present some 99% of Glasgow’s 41,200 primary pupils have a Glasgow Kidz Card, and about 70% of the city’s 29,400 secondary pupils have a Glasgow Young Scot Card.

The free screening at the Glasgow Film Theatre will take place at 11.30am every Saturday. At the IMAX cinema, the special screenings are at either 11.15am or 11.30am every Sunday (details attached).

At the GFT, all children under 8 must be accompanied by and adult. At the IMAX, the cut-off age is 12.

Films on offer at the GFT over the next few weeks include blockbuster The Cat in the Hat, 50 First Dates and Looney Tunes. The IMAX is showing Cyberworld 3D and 3D Mania.
