The complex will offer a host of indoor and outdoor facilities, including grass and synthetic football pitches, a rugby pitch, an athletics track and a fitness suite. The £3.67million project was funded by Glasgow City Council, sportscotland’s Lottery funded Sports Facilities Programme and the Pollok Social Inclusion Partnership.
The new facilities will provide opportunities for match play, training, coaching and instruction and development of non-competitive sport for people of all ages. Users will comprise of clubs, schools, colleges and the wider community, with emphasis on increasing participation and developing skills among young people.
The complex will play a major role in local development strategies for athletics, football, rugby league, rugby union, netball and hockey.
Nethercraigs will also benefit from the strong links it has developed with the nearby Cardonald College and local schools, with local college students playing a major role in assisting with the delivery of curriculum time physical activity for pupils from the 28 schools in the area. This, in turn, will provide the students of Cardonald College with the practical experience they require to successfully gain their qualifications in various courses.
Councillor John Lynch, convener of Glasgow City Council’s Cultural and Leisure Services, said: The opening of Nethercraigs Sports Complex provides Glasgow with another state-of-the-art sport facility, one that we are sure will play its part in improving the health and sporting performance of the people of the city."
Ian Taylor, chief executive of sportscotland, said: "We are delighted to have supported the redevelopment of the sports facilities at Nethercraigs with an award of £500,000 from sportscotland’s Lottery funded Sports Facilities Programme. No community should be denied access to sport as it makes such a valuable contribution to our lives, both physically and socially. This project is yet another example of our commitment to providing quality, accessible facilities to introduce people to the fun and enjoyment sport can provide, encouraging them to participate more often, as part of a healthy, active lifestyle."
