25th Great Scottish Run set for 3rd September 2006

The 2006 FRESH ‘N’ LO Great Scottish Run has been launched by Councillor John Lynch, convener of Glasgow City Council’s Cultural and Leisure Services committee, and Lee McConnell, the winner of the 400metres bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

This will be the 25th running of the Great Scottish Run, an event that has seen around 300,000 runners raise in the vicinity of £32million for charity since 1982.

The event takes place on Sunday 3 September 2006 and will feature the usual half marathon and 10k, and a 3k race for junior runners aged 9 - 17. The 2005 event attracted a record entry of 19,326.

Organisers Glasgow City Council aim to exceed this amazing number in 2006, and once again the senior races will begin in George Square and will head to the city’s south side across the Kingston Bridge before finishing on Glasgow Green.

As well as being a world class road race attracting past winners of the Olympic and London marathons, the FRESH ‘N’ LO Great Scottish Run is a fantastic day out, with runners taking part in fancy dress for charity and great entertainment taking place along the route.

Only the Great North Run and the Flora London Marathon are bigger events of this type in the UK than the FRESH ‘N’ LO Great Scottish Run.

Applicants can now enter online at www.run.glasgow.gov.uk. Information about training, healthy eating, charities and routes can be found on the website. Entry for the half marathon is £19.50 for scottishathletics-affiliated runners and £21.50 for non-affiliated, for the 10k £14.50 and £16.50, and for the junior run £5.00 (£2.50 for Glasgow Young Scot Card / Glasgow Kidz Card holders).

Entry forms are also available from any Glasgow City Council venue, sports shops, by calling the hotline on 0845 270 0166 or visiting the race website.

Councillor John Lynch said: "The FRESH‘N’ LO Great Scottish Run has been the country’s biggest mass participation sporting event for a quarter of a century now, and we are looking forward to the biggest and best day in its history this year. Millions of puunds raised for charity and thousand of runners transforming the face of Glasgow for a day make this a memorable event."

Sandy Wilkie, sales and marketing director for Robert Wiseman Dairies said: "This is a special year for FRESH 'N' LO and The Great Scottish Run. With both institutions celebrating 25 years of encouraging Scots (and beyond!), to look after their health, we'd like to encourage as many people as possible to take part in what we are sure will be a fantastic day out, and be part of a wee bit of Glasgow history in the making."
