Countdown to the Worlds as Glasgow becomes global piping capital

Bands from as far afield as Pakistan and Oman descend on Glasgow for the World Pipe Band Championships, Piping Live! and the Edinburgh Tattoo march past.

Resplendent in their green and orange outfits, the Patiala Pipe Band from Pakistan will wow the lunchtime crowds at St Enoch Square as the countdown to the World Pipe Band Championships begins.

Part of the Worlds on the Streets programme, Patiala’s performances, from Monday-Thursday, between 12 noon and 2pm, are sure to provide a cacophony of sound and colour, to brighten even the gloomiest of summer days.

Worlds on the Streets will also take place at the Donald Dewar Statue on Buchanan Street from 12 noon and 2pm Monday-Thursday. The Johnstone Pipe Band will also be performing at Glasgow Airport on 8th, 9th and 10th August from 10am until 12 noon.

On Friday 11th August, Beat the Retreat will see a large number of assembled bands march off from Blythswood Square at 12 noon, traversing through the city centre, before ending with a rousing display on George Square at 12.30pm.

A record number of bands from across the world have signed-up to this year’s World Pipe Band Championships, which take place at Glasgow Green on Saturday, 12 August.

Some 236 bands will bring an estimated 8,000 pipers and drummers from as far afield as Europe, Australia, Canada, USA and New Zealand to the city’s oldest common ground.

The Worlds – as they are affectionately known – have been associated with Glasgow since 1948.  Organised by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA), the event recognises the very best of traditional Scottish music and culture.

As well as the main competition at the Worlds, other attractions include Highland Dancing Competitions, Drum Major Competitions, Highland Games Heavy Events, traditional craft fairs and family entertainment across the site.

Piping Live! The Glasgow International Piping Festival will also take place this week, providing a showcase for some of the most innovative piping and pipers from across the world.

Both Piping Live! and the World Pipe Band Championships receive core funding from Glasgow City Council.
