Industrial Action on Tuesday 28 March 2006

Services provided by Glasgow City Council will be disrupted on 28 March as a result of national industrial action by local government Trade Unions.

EDUCATION

 

All primary, nursery and special educational needs schools, as well as family learning centres, will be closed on Tuesday 28 March 2006. The Council however, is keeping open its secondary schools as the industrial action does not affect janitorial and cleaning staff working in such establishments.

 

SOCIAL WORK

 

All offices will be closed. The Trade Unions have granted exemptions for approx. 300 staff involved in critical or essential areas of service such as Homelessness, Community Care (including residential units) and Children & Families.

 

DIRECT & CARE SERVICES

 

The GMB has granted exemptions for approx. 600 staff to provide cover for the most vulnerable of those clients receiving the Home Care service. There will also be a skeleton service at our Homes for the Elderly.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

 

All Domestic & Commercial Refuse Collections will be suspended for the day. There will be no backcourt or bulk uplift services. There will be no street sweeping service. All public toilets will be closed.

 

CULTURAL & LEISURE SERVICES

 

All Museums will be closed. All Libraries will be closed. All sports facilities – with the exception of the Ibrox Community Complex, Nethercraig Sports Complex, Stepford Road Complex and the Springburn Leisure Centre – will be closed.

 

Most Community facilities will be closed for all or part of the day.

 

BUILDING SERVICES

 

All depots will be closed. Unions have granted exemptions for approx. 20 staff to provide a skeleton service in the event of emergency calls.

 

LAND SERVICES

 

All roads depots will be closed. Parks will be open but not staffed. All facilities and pavilions within parks will be closed. There will no cremations service, but no bookings were taken for Tuesday 28 March in anticipation of the Industrial Action.

 

GENERAL

 

All council buildings, including the City Chambers and the Martha Street Registrations office, will be closed to the public.

 

The Park Circus Marriage Suites will be closed, but no bookings were taken for Tuesday 28 March in anticipation of the Industrial Action.

 

All local Revenues & Benefits offices will be closed. There will be no facility for the payment of Council Tax at 45 John Street.
