Households whose electoral roll details are unchanged can now return their information via a FREEPHONE telephone or internet registration service.
By dialling a FREEPHONE number, and keying-in a special two-part security code printed on the registration form, residents can access a fully-automated touch-tone system that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the registration period.
The services also provides assistance to residents who do not have English as their first language.
The FREEPHONE number is 0800 197 9879 for English, or 0800 107 9879 for Arabic, Cantonese, French, Gaelic, Greek, Italian, Polish, Punjabi and Urdu.
The same two-part security code also allows residents to visit a secure website at www.registerbyinternet.com/glasgow and record their ‘no change’ details online.
If the information within a particular household has changed, the traditional method of completing and returning the form by FREEPOST must be followed.
The annual canvass will run until mid-November. All households will receive a maximum of two reminders after delivery of the initial form. The new Register of Electors will then be published on 1st December 2006, and will be in place for the Scottish Parliamentary and Local Government elections of May 2007. If anyone living in any particular household fails to return up-to-date information during the annual canvass, they may be unable to vote in the May 2007 elections, or indeed any other subsequent elections or by-elections within Glasgow throughout the year.
The FREEPHONE and internet registration service is being provided for Glasgow City Council by Electoral Reform Services (ERS). More than 2.5 million households elsewhere in the UK have used the service since 2004.
