Importance of Vocational Training in Glasgow is recognised

School pupils, trainees and apprentices rewarded for excellence in their studies

Glasgow City Council’s Corporate Awards 2007, now in its second year, has helped to showcase and rewards the exceptional achievements of Glaswegians who have gained a vocational qualification.

A total of 72 people - from school pupils and adults returning to work to Council trainees and apprentices - were recognised with a Corporate Award.

Bailie Gordon Matheson, Executive Member for Education and Social Renewal, presented the awards at a ceremony held in Glasgow’s City Chambers on Tuesday, January 29.

Bailie Matheson said: "Every year the Council helps to produce and support hundreds of apprentices and trainees who are building bright and successful futures for themselves. The skills they have developed are also contributing to the ongoing strength and continued growth of Glasgow’s economy.

"I am very proud that Glasgow City Council is able to recognise and reward these young people’s dedication to their training.

"From our award winning vocational training in schools to modern apprenticeships and traineeship programmes, we are leading the way in providing alternatives to a life marred by worklessness.

"These programmes have helped many people to turn around their lives, secure training and employment. I hope our example is one that will be replicated across private and public sectors elsewhere in the city."

John Kane, Glasgow City Council’s Head of Vocational Training, said: "This awards ceremony demonstrates the value Glasgow City Council places on first class quality training.

"The award winners come from a variety of diverse groups, ranging from young people still at school to those adults returning to work as well as our own Council employees.

"We are committed to providing the best opportunities for the citizens of Glasgow and these award winners are testament to the hard work contributed by all concerned."
