Glasgow City Council statement issued after police called in by staff to primary school

Headteacher praised for quick thinking

Bailie Gordon Matheson, Executive Member for Education and Social Renewal, said: "The headteacher at Blairtummock Primary School acted entirely appropriately in calling in police after items were discovered on the premises last Friday. Police advice was taken by the head teacher on how best to proceed.

"A member of Education Services’ senior management team and a Health and Safety expert also went straight to the school.

"The incident meant that it was necessary for the police to close one part of the school while they carried out their investigations. Whilst at no time was there any threat or risk to the safety of the children and staff within the school it was suggested by the police that children may be better leaving the premises.

"There was no panic at any stage, and the children responded extremely well in doing what was asked of them.

"The police have now completed their investigations within the school and at this point we do not anticipate any further disruption.

"We apologise to parents who want the school to provide information as to the exact nature of the incident. This is a matter for the police, and something we cannot comment on.

"The head teacher has sent a letter to all parents explaining the situation and thanking them for their support."
