The Executive Committee agreed that the school would be built on the site of the former St Gerard’s Secondary, which closed in June 1998, by City Building (Glasgow) LLP for £11,432,909.45.
The school will replace the existing provision at Hill’s Trust and Copeland Primaries in the non-denominational sector, St Saviour’s Primary in the denominational sector and Broomloan Nursery.
Following a public ballot, it was agreed in March 2008 to change the non-denominational school name to Riverside Primary. So the new school will be called Riverside Primary, St Saviour’s Primary and Broomloan Nursery.
Work is due to start on site within the next few weeks, and it is anticipated that the school will open its doors to pupils in January 2010.
The project is part of Phase 4 of the Council’s groundbreaking pre-12 strategy, under which its primary and early years sector is being revamped.
To date, 18 brand new schools or school campuses have been constructed across the city in Phases 1-3. A further 16 - of which the Riverside Primary, St Saviour’s Primary and Broomloan Nursery building is one - are scheduled to be constructed as part of Phase 4.
Bailie Gordon Matheson, Executive Member for Education and Social Renewal, said: “It is very exciting that work is about to start on this state of the art new school for Govan.
“It has been a particularly challenging design process because of the complexity of the site, but the challenges have been met and in about two years Govan is going to boast a wonderful new multiplex school.
“The new schools opening across the city are making a huge difference to the education of our young people, and the response of pupils, staff and parents has been overwhelmingly positive.
“The aim of our educational estates strategy is to provide a better environment for the education of our young people in order to give them the best possible chance of reaching their potential. I am confident that this new Govan school will prove to be yet another fine example of how that is being achieved.”
Councillors also agreed today to accept the results of public ballots regarding the name of four new schools across the city:
· Easthall, Provanhall and Wellhouse Primaries, which will amalgamate and co-locate with Barlanark Autism Unit in a new building in October 2008, will be called Aultmore Park Primary and Aultmore Park Autism Unit
· Easthall Nursery, Newhurst Nursery and Provanhall Nursery Class, which will amalgamate in a new building in October 2008, will be called Beechwood Nursery School
· Arden and Carnwadric Primaries, which will amalgamate and co-locate with the Jimmy Dunnachie Family Learning Centre in a new building in the autumn, will be called Ashpark Primary
· Drumoyne, Elder Park and Greenfield Primaries, which will amalgamate and co-locate with the Govan Family Centre in November 2009, will be called Pirie Park Primary.
