Council Plans Mean More Afforable Housing in Govan

More than 200 new homes and an Epilepsy Assessment Centre are to be built in Govan as Glasgow City Council sells land to boost the provision of affordable housing in the city.

Glasgow’s Executive Council today (20 March 2008) agreed on proposals to sell land to housing associations within the city for them to develop.

Three sites in the Govan area, including land around Elderpark, will be sold to Elderpark and Govan Housing Associations to make way for 219 low cost housing units, for sale and for rent.

In addition, the site of Elderpark Primary school, due for closure in 2010, will be sold to the Scottish charity Quarries who plan to build an Epilepsy Assessment Centre with residential beds.

Other developments include:

· Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association building 17 new homes on a vacant site at Muirshiel Crescent in Priesthill

· Ardenglen Housing Association building 42 new homes at the site of the former Tormusk Primary School

· Kendoon Housing Association building 10 new homes in Drumry

The land disposals, totalling nearly £1.7million, will mean 288 new homes for the city.

At the same Council meeting it was also agreed that three areas of derelict land in Castlemilk would be sold to Gladedale for £14.4 million. The developments, totalling 363 residential units, will be encouraged to have play and greenspace provision as well as local shops.

Executive Member for Development and Regeneration, Councillor George Ryan, said: “The Council is committed to ensuring affordable housing across all tenures in Glasgow.

“All of these new developments will help to address the need for more quality low cost housing in the city, while progressing the renewal and regeneration in the socially rented housing sector."
