Culture and Sport Glasgow to run much-needed Govan Community Centre

Culture and Sport Glasgow (CSG) have been granted a lease to manage and provide leisure and community services for the Ibrox Community Complex.

The decision was made following recommendations in a report approved by Glasgow City Council’s Executive Committee today (Friday, 16 May).

CSG will manage the Ibrox Community Complex, on Hinshelwood Drive in Govan, on behalf of Glasgow City Council.

The community centre had been leased to the Trustees of the Ibrox Trust but this contract was terminated in March 2007.

Culture and Sport Glasgow agreed to continue to run the centre’s services, from March, while an evaluation of its future viability was investigated.

The assessment found that the Ibrox Community Complex was an essential and well used resource and should be kept by the Council.

In addition it was recognised as playing a significant role in supporting and developing football within Glasgow and helped to implement the City’s Sport Pitch Strategy.

Ibrox Community Complex has:
* Full size floodlit synthetic pitch
* 15 station fitness suit
* 1 court badminton hall
* Youth games area
* Information Communications Technology suite
* Children’s play park

As well as programmed bookings the Ibrox Community Complex offers free casual play, community, squad and club training and the Rangers football development programme.

The property is in good condition but to maintain its high standard, maintenance works costing £230,000, will be carried out to its roof and internal finishes as well as perimeter fencing and gates.

Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for Culture and Sport, said: “This is a fantastic sporting facility that is well used by the local community and people from all over Glasgow.

The Council wants to play its part in improving the health and well being of Glasgow’s residents, especially our young people. We will continue to invest in new and existing sports facilities in order to achieve this aim.”
