Lord Provost recognises Glasgow's great and good at annual award ceremony

A clutch of men and women who have dedicated their professional lives to public service, worked selflessly for their communities or distinguished themselves in business, the arts, sport or entertainment will be recognised by the city’s First Citizen, the Lord Provost Bob Winter tonight.

The Lord Provost said: “I am looking forward to tonight’s event. It is a great occasion and a wonderful way to honour people from diverse walks of life, all of whom have one thing in common - a commitment to Glasgow and its people.

“It is entirely appropriate therefore, that we publicly express our gratitude to these outstanding men and women by celebrating their achievements with a civic dinner.”

The dinner will be held in the City Chamber’s Banqueting Hall at 7.30pm. Music will be provided by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama String Quartet.

The Loving Cup 2008 will go to Louise Martin CBE who led the team that secured the 2014 Commonwealth Games for Glasgow and is now Chair of sportscotland.

The Loving Cup is the city’s highest honour and is presented to ‘any person or group who have brought distinction and honour to Glasgow’.

The Public Service Award will go to Mr John Bannon MBE, this year’s most nominated individual. Mr Bannon has served on a number of health-related board and organisations including the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School NHS Trust, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Loretto Care Ltd.

The Lord Provost said: “John is a truly remarkable individual who, despite ill health has never shirked from boldly representing the needs of the patient on the various boards and organisations he has sat. The nominations indicate how highly regarded he is by all whom have met him and it is a great pleasure to be celebrating his hard work and dedication.”

Professor Sir John Arbuthnott is recognised with Lord Provost’s Special Award for Lifetime Professional Services in Glasgow and Professor Sir Kenneth Calman with the Lord Provost’s Special Award for Services to Health in Glasgow.

Other honours will go to poet Edwin Morgan, playwright and writer James Barclay and footballing legends Billy McNeill and John Greig.
