Genealogy Centre

Have you ever wondered where your family came from? Or how you would find out?

Your birth certificate can provide a good starting point which can lead you in many other directrions to help you reveal the secrets of your past.

What we can offer you

At the Strathclyde Area Geneology Centre you will be allocated a computer with access to the National Index in Edinburgh.  Microfiche readers are also available where necessary.

In the unlikely event that the computer system is unavailable, you would revert to the previous system and continue your search using the records held on microfiche.  In some instances, the digitised records are difficult to read and in these instances you would also revert back to microfiche.  Please be aware that the microfiche records are for the Strathclyde area only and cover the years 1855 to 1993.

Records/sources available

The following Strathclyde Area Records are available for your use:

Statutory Records (1855-2003) - digitised entries on computer

Civil Registration for Births, Deaths and Marriages was introduced in 1855. These are the records of District Registrars.

Census Records (1871, 1891, 1901 digitised entries on computer, 1881 index on separate computer system)

These records are arranged by address within Census Districts.  They hold a wealth of information - name, relationship to householder, age, marital status, occupation and parish of birth.

Old Parochial registers (pre 1855) - Computer/Microfilm

The Old Parish Registers list Church of Scotland baptisms, marriage proclamations and burials. In some areas these Registers may be incomplete.
