Asylum Pre 2000
Asylum & Immigration Act 1996
Those persons arriving in the UK prior to April 2000 are subject to the Asylum & Immigration Act 1996. Following successful Judicial Review against London local authorities, the Courts ruled that whilst Asylum Seekers under this Act were not entitled to accommodation and support by local authorities, local authorities did indeed have a duty of care under the provisions made in the 1948 National Assistance Act.
Asylum Seekers, subject to this legislation, are therefore accommodated in Glasgow through the private sector and financial support as via Section 12 of the Social Work (Scotland) 1968 Act. There are approximately 130 cases still living in Glasgow being supported by Glasgow City Council's Social Work Services in terms of this legislation.
If you are an Asylum Seeker, subject to the Asylum & Immigration Act 1996, and have problems financially you should contact your local Social Work Area Team (See How to Access Services). Any difficulties experienced in terms of accommodation, asylum claim, appeal etc. you should contact:

The Asylum Support (Interim Provisions) 1999
The Interim Provision Scheme was brought in by the Government on 6th December 1999 to ease the pressures experienced by the London Boroughs in terms of available accommodation. Glasgow City Council's involvement was a Memorandum of Understanding between the City Council and the London Asylum Seekers Consortium to provide a number of units of accommodation for families and to provide financial support via the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968.
If you are an Asylum Seeker subject to the Asylum Support (Interim Provisions) 1999, you will have been dispersed to Glasgow via the London Boroughs between March and April 2000. You will be receiving financial support through the Glasgow Asylum Support Project by weekly Giro. Should you experience any problems, please contact:
