By carers we mean people who look after a partner, relative or friend who cannot manage without help because of illness, including mental illness, dementia, frailty or disability. They may or may not live together.
Across Glasgow, regardless of where they live, carers can access a range of services through locally based centres and projects. Support Services have been developed to support carers in their caring role. These services are designed to support all carers and will be able to provide information on support services to individual care groups (for example dementia, mental health or older people).
General information and advice is also available directly from the Carers Information and Support Line on 0141 353 6504.
The Glasgow Carers Strategy 2008 – 11 sets out the strategic direction for the further development and delivery of services to carers in Glasgow over the next 3 years.
For more information on the Consultation Strategy see - Glasgow Carers Strategy.
In September 1999 the Scottish Executive produced a carers strategy. Glasgow City Council and its planning partners have produced a Joint Carers Strategy and a Joint Young Carers Strategy aimed at delivering the objectives laid out in the national strategy and it is Glasgow's intention to continue to develop quality support services to carers. The Joint Carers Strategy and the Joint Young Carers Strategy are available in portable document format and require Adobe Acrobat to access them. The Adobe Acrobat reader can be freely downloaded from the Adobe Web site.
