The light duties team provides the opportunity for offenders who may in the past have been assessed as unsuitable to perform community service for reasons of health or disability.
Over the past few years, offenders with serious addiction problems have increasingly been sentenced to a period of community service. Offenders with addiction problems are normally placed in one of the light duty teams which enables support to tackle addiction to be provided in the community while the individual is performing unpaid work as part of a community service order. Such an arrangement requires unpaid work to be organised which takes account of the individual's ability to co-operate whilst addressing addiction problems.
The majority of the work consists of:
- assembling lightweight furniture
- glass painting
- benchmaking
- children's toys
These types of community service placements enable the production of goods which can then be sold to raise funds for non-profit making charitable organisations.
