Community Service by Offenders

Women-only work team

Community service is one of a range of disposals available to courts when sentencing women offenders.

During 1998, the joint report 'A Safer Way' produced by Chief Inspectors of social work and prisons was published highlighting a range of issues surrounding offending by women. This report identified the need to ensure a range of effective disposals which took account of issues facing women offenders.

Community service has responded to this report by establishing women-only work teams which provide a safe environment for women in a single sex community service placement.

The women-only team undertakes a range of community service work including:

  • painting and decorating work
  • assembling lightweight furniture
  • glass painting
  • bench making
  • children’s toys
