Pharmacy Services

Glasgow Addiction Services Pharmacy team provides advice, support, training and education on all aspects of substance misuse to all community pharmacies in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, primary and secondary services, community addiction teams, purchased services, voluntary agencies and criminal justice services. 

 

Glasgow Pharmacy


The pharmacy team provide advice on the general assessment of the pharmaceutical needs of patients with drug and alcohol problems and ensures relevant input of pharmaceutical services.  They assist with formulary development, non-medical prescribing advice, secondary services and the development of the Patient Group Directions for a range of addiction related services.  The team is responsible for the management of the pharmacy based Needle Exchanges in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and assists in the development and implementation of community based needle replacement schemes.


The team also assists in the implementation, evaluation and monitoring of the supervised methadone / buprenorphine dispensing scheme. The team actively promotes pharmacy based audit and research in addictions to ensure the development of innovative evidence based practices within community and secondary services. In November 2007 the team was awarded the Scottish Pharmacy Award for "Innovation in Service Development"


Other information - Naloxone Pilot
Glasgow Addiction Services is currently involved in a Naloxone Pilot with other partner organisations developing a scheme allowing a take home supply of Naloxone for service users and their families using a Patient Group Direction (PGD) for supply.
